Hajdúszoboszló — the town of sunlight

Hajdúszoboszló is located in the North-Eastern part of the Great Plain, 20 km from Debrecen. Neighboring the bath town renowned for its medicinal water there are rich agricultural croplands. Due to the town’s location the annual average of sunny hours measured in Hajdúszoboszló can reach or even exceed 2000 hours.

The settlement had already been populated in the Migration Period as archeological findings show. Szoboszló was first mentioned in written documents in 1075 when Géza I granted the half of Szoboszlóvásár’s royal tax to an abbey. Later István Bocskai, the Prince of Transylvania authorized 700 members of the hajdú cavalry to settle in Szoboszló in his emblazoned grant letter dated 1606. ’Hajdú’ had been added to the name of the settlement at that time, however, its recent form, Hajdúszoboszló is used only from the 19th century. The town lived its everyday and calm life similarly to the little towns of the Hajdúság until the 20th century when its development to a bath town has been started.

Curative medicinal water

Medicinal water of Hajdúszoboszló has a curative effect due to its thermal components. Spas and medicinal complexes offer treatments for several diseases, e.g. surgical, neural, gynecological and locomotor disorders by professional water cures.

Besides the possibilities of healing Hajdúszoboszló also offers sightseeing attractions. Going for a sightseeing tour, it’s practical to start at the statue of Ferenc Pávai Vajna who had discovered the thermal water located at the periphery of the bath park. Walking towards another sight is the Belfry with the bell collection of a couple born in Hajdúszoboszló and working as handicrafts artists. We can have a rest for a moment at the memorial column raised for the 900th anniversary of the first appearance of the town Hajdúszoboszló in written documents in 1975. In Szilfákalja Street nearby the cultural centre a Millenium Statue Park can be found and walking towards the equestrian statue of Bocskai delights you. In the neighborhood there is a Reformed church built in Classicist style where not only church services are held, but also serves as a hall for choir festivals and organ concerts.

Hajdúszoboszló — one of Hungary’s most popular towns

In Bocskai Street neighboring Hősök Square there is a Late Baroque Roman Catholic church from 1776, the interesting feature of which is that Pope John Paul II had visited it when he was the Archbishop of Kraków. In Bocskai Street there are four museums presenting the local history and ethnical values of Hajdúszoboszló. It’s worth to visit the Museum of Local History and Ethnography and the art gallery, where permanent and also temporary exhibitions are presented to those who are interested in the fine arts of Hajdúszoboszló. The most recently established institution is the International Modern Museum of Hajdúszoboszló, where contemporary artworks are exhibited. Guests of the hotel can take some extra walk and visit Gönczy Pál Street; the memorial of the victims of the 17th century Turkish military revenge stands in the park of the vocational school and college. Certainly, hotel guests may not forget about the pottery museum where artworks of craftsmen recently living in Hajdúszoboszló and making the famous black ceramics of Nádudvar can be seen.

According to the Hungarian Tourist Authority’s data Hajdúszoboszló was the third on the popularity list of Hungarian towns in domestic tourists’ view.
