Horseback trips with the Máta Stud
Close to the hotel of Hortus Naturae Hotels in Hortobágy is located the Máta Stud of Hortobágy Nature Protection and Gene Preservation Non-profit Company, one of Hungary's main horse breeding centers with two hundred horses.
The 300-year old stud's main task is to preserve the traditional Hungarian Nonius horse, and breed Hungarian sport horses suitable for modern demands of sports and hobbies as well. The stud was first mentioned in written documents in 1671. Its history is unique as the horse stock kept at the Hortobágy was owned by the farmers of Debrecen town, and methods of horse breeding on the Puszta were adapted to the demands and possibilities of the town and the characteristics of the landscape. Máta became the centre of Debrecen's farming and horse breeding from the late 19th century.
Programs between two horseback trips
The stud's indoor riding arena gives place for the musical horse parade tells visitors about Hungary's equestrian traditions, the horse breeding work, Hungarian horse breeds and carriage types and presents dressage riders and carriages.
Carriage driving has a long tradition in Hungary. In winter indoor competitions are held in the indoor riding arena of the Máta Stud where participants contest with Hungarian world champions. If you feel like driving a carriage, it’s possible to attend training where two-in-hand or four-in-hand driving can be learnt.
Horseback trips
Cross-country riding on the 'Puszta' and horseback trips roaming on the most beautiful landscapes of the Hortobágy National Park are provided for experienced riders, and riding school as well for beginners.
Tiszafüred Hortobágy horseback trip:
7 nights, 6 days riding, full service. The horseback trip's length is 240 km in 6 days through the beautiful and romantic landscapes of Tiszafüred and its surroundings, near Lake Tisza's and wild waters bird fauna and flora. The grassland of Hortobágy is the largest coherent grassland of Central Europe. The landscape is excellent for horseback riding. Besides the flora and fauna of the Puszta ancient Hungarian domestic animals can be seen, e.g. herds of 'racka' sheep, grey cattle, buffalo and 'mangalica' pigs. Participants of the horseback trip can enjoy traditional Hungarian hostility. For non-riders the program is available with a carriage.
Tiszafüred Hortobágy-Tokaj horseback trip:
7 nights, 6 day riding, full service. The horseback trip's length is 250 km in 6 days. After leaving the grasslands the trip turns back and following the Tisza arrives to the land of Tokaj-Hegyalja where the outstanding Hungarian 'Tokaji' wine is produced.
Trips on horseback or by carriage:
Day rides at the most beautiful parts of Hortobágy National Park; 40 km riding a day. Our guests have accommodation every day at our hotel. Total length of the trip is 240 km. The trip is recommended to experienced riders; beginners or non-riders can take a horse carriage. Picnics are available for the participants on demand. Riding style: English. Landscape: plain. The day trips depart from Máta Stud and guests arrive at the same place every day.
